Heather and Jason – Edenton, North Carolina I’m Heather and my husband's name is Jason. When I walked out and closed the door on my marriage on July 7, 2005, we had an amicable separation. After ten years, two children, and both of us trying to make our marriage work, nothing had improved. Our hearts were beat up and broken at the thought of ending it, but we were kind of relieved that we could stop fighting and get some peace. It did not take long after the separation for both of us to move on and date, hoping to find that perfect partner we had dreamed of. Although I dated and had a few serious long-term relationships, I did not marry. My relationship with the Lord grew stronger, and I knew God had a definite plan and purpose for me and my husband. I started tuning in to the Holy Spirit for guidance on my spouse, and I would not enter a relationship unless I got the “go-ahead” from God. I focused my attention on allowing God to heal me from my wounds and on becoming the woman He intended me to be. Among the things the Lord told me was, “It will happen suddenly. Everyone will be shocked at who God is, and you will know without question it is Him.” Now, you may wonder where Jason was during this time. Our relationship went from bad to worse into a downright battleground. We could not agree on anything. He entered a legal marriage contract with another woman whom the enemy most definitely used to tear down any part of our family that was left. The other woman lied and abused our children. We were in and out of court between custody hearings, restraining orders, and arrest warrants. When that relationship ended, there was a ray of hope that Jason and I could at least be civil. As soon as their divorce was finalized, Jason entered into another legal marriage contract with another woman. This one was a spiritual battle as well. She seemed perfect for him, and they seemed so happy. They built a life together for nine years, doing all the things happy couples do. And I got to watch it all. They even joined my church and were part of beach trips, vacations, kids’ sporting activities, and graduation ceremonies. Understand, I did not know I was standing for Jason — I just knew I was standing for a husband, the man God intended for me to marry. I will admit, seeing others, including Jason, marry and remarry all while I waited, became frustrating. As my hope was deferred, I became more and more heartsick, even though I knew what God had promised. It was difficult to see others making memories while I was working overtime to make ends meet. Then, I got my “suddenly” moment. I got a call from my daughter telling me Jason had come home from work to an empty house and a “Dear John” letter. Everyone was shocked. I would later learn that even in the moment of despair, as he stood in the kitchen reading the letter that could not explain what “happened,” the Lord spoke to him in an almost audible voice and told him, “She is gone because Heather is your wife.” In the days that followed, the Lord spoke the same to me, and by the time Jason asked me to try again, I already knew my answer was yes. So, on July 7, 2021 — exactly 16 years from the day I left — God reconciled my marriage against all odds. What would have seemed impossible to the logical mind happened instantly in God’s time. We remarried on September 16, 2021, 26 years to the day since we first said “I do.”
