July 20 2026 Devotional: The Prophetic Promise Of Restoration As You Stand For Marriage Restoration
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet.... He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children, and the hearts of the children back to their fathers...” - Malachi 4:5-6 (NASB) In the final verses of the Old Testament, we find an amazing promise, a promise that carries profound significance for those who stand and believe in the restoration of their family. Malachi 4:5-6 speaks of a future day when God would send Elijah, the prophet, to turn the hearts of family members back to each other. This promise is not confined to ancient times but extends to us today. It is a promise of restoration, reconciliation and transformation, a promise that speaks directly to the desires of those whose marriages are in need of healing and renewal. To grasp the depth of this promise, it’s essential to understand the role of Elijah. Elijah was an Old Testament prophet known for his unwavering dedication to God. He fearlessly confronted the forces of darkness in his time. In this prophetic promise, the return of Elijah before the final judgment day comes with the prophetic mandate that we are currently walking in. Centuries after Malachi’s prophecy, the spirit of Elijah did indeed return but in the person of John the Baptist. Jesus said, in Matthew 11:14, “And if you are willing to accept it, he [John the Baptist] is the Elijah who was to come.” John prepared the way for the Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah. His ministry was marked by a call to repentance and a preparation of hearts for the coming of the Savior. Just as Elijah’s ministry foreshadowed the coming of the Lord, John’s ministry prepared the hearts of people for the ultimate restoration found in Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 5:18, the Apostle Paul echoes the theme of reconciliation that was initiated by John the Baptist and manifested through Jesus: “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” Through Christ, we are not only reconciled to God but also commissioned to bring reconciliation to our relationships, including our marriages. Today, I want you to be encouraged that the heart of God, as expressed in Malachi 4:5-6, is to turn the hearts of family members back to each other. And yes, this promise extends to your marriage. It is God’s plan and desire to restore and reconcile what may seem irreparable. Just as John the Baptist prepared hearts for Jesus, God desires to prepare and soften the heart of your spouse, turning it back to you. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s heart for restoration. He is the God of second chances, the God who makes all things new. Your marriage is not exempt from His redemptive plan. Even in what may seem like the last days of your relationship, God’s promise of restoration remains unshaken. So hold fast to this promise, even when circumstances seem bleak. Trust that God’s plan is greater than what you can see in the natural. Be encouraged by the ministry of reconciliation that Christ has given you and pray with confidence for the turning of your spouse’s heart back to you. In the last days, when all seems uncertain, remember this promise of restoration. It is a promise rooted in God’s unchanging character and His boundless love for you and your marriage. Your spouse’s heart is turning back to you!
